Lou Merkert was born in Eberbach, Germany. He studied at Sport High School in Schwerin and trained initially as a toolmaker. It was during this time when Lou discovered his interest in art, in particular painting, sculpture and music. Memories of his childhood recall his mother being a keen photographer who also recorded family videos with her 'Super 8' recorder. This early life experience and influence inspired Lou to look deeper into photography and film as a mode of developing his visual language and artistic expression

Kevin Hegarty was born in Dublin, Ireland. He studied at Griffith College Dublin, where he received his degree in Photographic media. Kevin relished his time at GCD, learning as much as he could from a creatively supportive and culturally diverse environment. From a young age, Kevin watched documentaries, particularly captivated by wildlife programmes. He was fascinated by the intrinsic nature of animals, co-existing within their natural habitat. The natural world ignited Kevin's imagination and curiosity, spending many free hours as a young boy observing, watching, listening and relating in such a way that has influenced and inspired his work to date.

Working together, Lou + Kevin share a deep passion and commitment to creating film and documenting many forms and walks of life. Collaborating on projects, they learn from each other, assisting in bringing out the best in their work, by cultivating a calm and supportive approach. This dynamic translates into a rich and cohesive production process. Subtle and sensitive editing skills combined with a professional and personable style of filmmaking helps to reveal the nature of things, providing meaning and a platform for the content they strive to communicate and express.
